Need help buying first laptop: want a dell to simplify choices. Inspiron or xps? what kind of specs?
I won't be doing much gaming. want it to be upgradable and last for awhile. Not too much travel but needs toughness for portability. What are your suggestions concerning size and specs. any experiences w/ dell machines? thanks a bunch!
I would look at the Dell Latitude series. They are very nice it might cost a little more but they are also built to last. I have a Dell Latitude cpx that is quite old but is still chugging along!

If the Dell brand of your choice, it faces many decisions to make. The latest model of the Dell Inspiron range of notebooks is the new R, which offers a selection of Intel Core processors and i5 i3, 15 inches and 17 inches and a polished metal finish in a variety of colors.
For its price: Inspiron XPS vs Alienware vs Studio R
Worth stacking the line against new models available. We took the basic price of high-end 15 "Inspiron R - at the time of writing $ 1,499 in the Dell website - and applied it to other Dell laptop lines to see how big that money can buy.
We compared the specific baseline for Dell Inspiron R similar designs the company's XPS and Alienware lines. Although everyone claims to serve a different niche, after all, are all Windows laptops. What differences do not choose a different line, is really the same price point?
The price is a sensitive issue to identify exactly with Dell, offering special rates that vary considerably in value and discounts on a weekly basis. There is something of the love of every one of these laptops, but in a comparison of rates Inspiron R quite well.
Dell Studio XPS 16
The price similar XPS 16 largest claims to fame is the lush 15.6-inch screen 1080p, making it a decent choice for those who want high quality video presentation and have a 6-Cell (56WHr) Li-Ion Primary Battery, but otherwise ordinary rates Core2Duo processor evil.
Dell Alienware M11x

In essence, the same price as their brothers, the Inspiron R has an Intel Core i5, which is not exclusive, but should be quite adequate for most processing tasks and 2.2AHr 6-cell Lithium Ion Battery. The same is true of the 1 GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 and 5400 rpm, 640 GB hard drive.
One surprising thing we found with the Inspiron line R was at the time of this writing, we were able to specify the way a lot of optional components. Dell currently offers a single processor, display and the choice of memory for this line, so those who want such a system, but with a little 'tweaking might want to look elsewhere.
