How do I remove an existing partition in my hard drive using Windows XP operating system?
I bought a refurbished laptop and it came with an existing partition, 3 partition total. I want to consolidate one partition to my main partition (C: drive) without reformating the system. Is there any way I can do that with the use of Windows XP utilities?
The only way to ensure no data loss is to make and verify a backup of your data. I've used XP utilities, Partition Magic, and other older tools over the years. Nothing is risk free. Take the time and create the backup. Then take a little more time and test it to verify that you can recover from it.
I case you haven't found it already, you need to get to the Windows XP utility for managing partitions. From the "Start" button, choose "All Programs" --> "Accessories" --> "System Tools" --> "Administrative Tools" --> "Computer Management". In that utility, the left pane includes "Storage" and within that "Disk Management", which you should click. This displays the current partitions of all current drives.
You will see your disk and its three partitions. Right-click the drive or any of its partitions to see the partition management options available under XP. If you can't move, create/delete, and resize partitions the way you want, then it's time for a third party utility like Partition Magic. I think Norton (now Symantec) still has some utilities along these lines too.

Buying a computer is not at all an easy job, one has look get detailed information of the available computers of good and reputed brands. - Is the operating system current (Windows vista/Windows Xp). Earlier versions probably run slower (windows 2000) and would not be advisable unless your needs are limited (i.e. web surfing, Word...). In any event, stay away with computers running on Windows 98 (granted you don't find many anymore). Also be aware of Windows Vista. Many users are reverting back to XP and that is even more obvious in the corporate world. Why? Vista looks nice but doesn't bring many technical improvements; therefore IT managers are not willing to implement something new when what they have works just fine. Some domestic users just don't like the new way of navigation within the Vista Operating System.
- Check if the configuration of the computer you are buying is good.
- Check the speed of the processor. If possible start the computer and see how long it takes to fully turn on. If it's slow just turning on, imagine the lack of speed once you start adding software.
