I need a Heat sink fan that would not cover the RAM slots on this MOBO...Thanks in advance!?
I have this MOBO
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128416
I bought this heat sink fan
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185125
but that was too big and covered up 1 and half of the ram slots and I am hoping to upgrade the ram soon so I don't want to block that. I see theres different sizes of fans but I want to see if anybody has actually used any of the smaller fans on similar boards or have similar problems and would recommend something to me. I sent that fan back btw. Thanks guys, this is my first build and I as far as I heard heat sink fans are day and night difference. Thanks again
Unfortunately The Arctic Cooler has one problem...It can only be mounted in a north-south direction blocking you RAM slots and because if that it can't be modified (cut fins away) to uncover the RAM slots. Other wise its perfect! (well almost!) The Zalman cooler 9500, 9700, or 9900 can be mounted in any of four directions with east-west the best as the fan sucks air in directly from the front and sends it directly to the rear eliminating conflicting air flow. The fins are soft copper (and VERY sharp) so they can be cut if necessary to open direct access to RAM. Standard RAM will fit with no modification however if you use the G. Skills "rip jaw" or Corsair Dominator seres with the high heat sinks you will have to modify the fins on the CPU cooler. I find that by dry fitting things first you can pretty much see if or how much you need to cut off the fins. If you find you don't need to.. then just put the RAM in first and Then install the CPU cooler since you wont be pulling the 2 sticks of RAM out any time soon....just putting more in! The other 2 slots for RAM are easily accessible.
Things are continuing to evolve with Panasonic®. The rugged Toughbook and some semi-rugged models typically don't have a cooling fans. Instead, they are designed for what is termed "thermal management," and feature low-voltage chipsets from Intel®, and a sink and pipe design that helps heat dissipate.
Why No Cooling Fan?
Because they have shown a high failure rate, cooling fans are considered unreliable. Once its performance is compromised, a fan can't keep dust and moisture out, a "no-no" for a rugged Toughbook used out in the extreme temperatures where exposure to the elements is a given. As recently as 2010, Panasonic engineers developed a cooling system that is a hybrid, including a specially designed rugged fan but also software that slows the clock speed so the unit runs cooler should the fan fail. Older models, however, have no cooling fan.
Benefits of No Cooling Fans in Panasonic Toughbooks
Without the features that come with a fan-type of system, the chassis is sealed off more effectively from moisture and dust. Also, the battery lasts longer. Panasonic Toughbooks are quieter too. Finally, the absence of a cooling fan equals few components that must move (the fewer the better in terms of performance and repair records).
The Cost of a Smart Solution
Ingenuity should be rewarded, plus the simple fact is that it costs a lot to produce elegant solutions. Such is the case with the proprietary thermal management solutions Panasonic engineers have developed. Reducing how much heat a semi-rugged or rugged Toughbook produces requires a lower voltage Intel processor and other automated functions for managing power. These things cost, but it's cool... literally.
